Skiing in California

California has 34 ski resorts, spread throughout five distinct regions in the state: Mount Shasta; Lake Tahoe; the Central Sierra region; Mammoth Mountain; and Southern California.

Lake Tahoe is the most famous and popular ski resort area in California. Heavenly Ski Resort in the South Lake Tahoe Area is California's largest ski resort, covering an area of 4,800 acres, it has 91 trails and 30 lifts, it also has the highest peak that summits at 10,068 feet, and the largest vertical drop on the West Coast at 3,500 feet.

Among other large resorts in the South Lake Tahoe Area are
Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe. The North Shores of Tahoe are much quieter and attract those whose prime concern is the slopes. Here you will find Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, and other resorts like Sugar Bowl, with its old-fashioned atmosphere, Alpine MeadowsNorthstarHomewood Mountain and Diamond Peak.

Mammoth Mountain
in central California, is the other main ski area. Mammoth Mountain has 156 runs, 28 lifts and is a great place for family skiing. It covers an area of 3,500 acres of terrain and has one of the longest skiing seasons from November to June. There are many places to stay in the area and more accommodations are being built each year.

In Southern California
smaller resorts in the San Bernardino National Forest like Snow Summit and Bear Mountain resorts offer good all-round everyday skiing areas with the emphasis on family fun. To the very north of the state is one of the highest mountains in California, Mount Shasta, a great family resort offering fantastic powder. The Central Sierra Region also offers some great snowboarding and skiing. Stanislaus National Forest, home to Bear Valley and Dodge Ridge, is among the most popular destinations.
