Alpine ski areas range from full service mountain resorts and ski towns in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, to smaller family oriented ski areas in every state. Those wishing to try downhill skiing or snowboarding may find the smaller areas more economical. The medium sized to larger areas offer great lodging packages, more and longer runs, and a wide variety of off slope services. Aprés ski nightlife in the ski towns is exciting and vivid. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing can be found at most of the alpine ski resorts as well as specific cross country ski and snowshoeing venues in both mountainous and less hilly regions. Skiing in Vermont is some of the best. There are more than 16 ski areas in Vermont, spread over all parts of the state. The ski areas in Northern Vermont includes: Bolton Valley; Burke Mountain; Jay Peak; Smugglers Notch and Stowe Mountain. In Central Vermont the following ski areas are to be found: Killington; Mad River Glen; Pico; Middlebury Snow Bowl and Sugarbush. Among ski areas in Southern Vermont are: Ascutney; Bear creek; Bromley; Magic Mountain; Mount Snow; Okemo and Stratton. Second only to Vermont, New Hampshire has many fine medium sized ski areas, most without the vast condominium developments that characterize so many ski resorts today. Many of the more important ski ares are located in the White Mountain Forest Region. One of those is the system of downhill ski trails that comprise Wildcat Mountain Ski Area in Pinkham Notch. Among other ski areas in New Hampshire are: Waterville Valley; Tuckerman Ravine; Mount Sunapee; Loon Mountain, Cranmore; Cannon Mountain; Bretton Woods; Attitash and Black Mountain. Main is home to excellent big mountain skiing. Sugarloaf peaks it's 118 trails over one huge mountain and provides the only lift serviced above-tree skiing in the East. Sugarloaf Mountain is located north of Farmington in the Carrabassett Valley. Sugarloaf has its own self-contained village within walking distance of the slopes. Another good choice is Sunday River Ski Resort that is spread over 8 peaks. It is located just outside of Bethel and offers many ski trails spread over the 8 peaks and are serviced with different lifts. Among Main's other medium sized ski/snowboard areas are: Saddleback; Shawnee Peak; Camdon Snow Bowl; Mt Abram; Black Mountain; Titcomb Mountain and Eaton Mountain. Southern New England also has its ski areas, with over a dozen in Massachusetts alone. A few of the can compete with some north country resorts, and are all closer to major cities, among these are: Berkshire East; Butternut; Catamount; Jiminy Peak and Wachusett Mountain. Connecticut's few ski areas are small, but convenient and fun. They include: Mohawk Mountain; Mount Southington; Ski Sundown and Woodbury.
