The island of Hakkaido in norther Japan is where you tend to find the best snow and the most challenging terrain. Among the many ski resorts on the island, Niseko is probably the most popular with younger skiers, thanks to its wide range of accommodation and exciting nightlife. Further south, Rusutsu is among the favorite destinations of families with young children. Both of the resorts are within easy reach of the city of Sapporo. The Yuzawa resort in the southern part of the Niigata region is only about an hour away from Tokyo. Among the ski resorts in Niigata, Naeba is probably the most trendy and popular. Hunter Mountain on Tochigi is also only a day trip away from Tokyo. On the island of Honshu is where you find Nagano, home to the Winter Olympics in 1998. There are a number of international standard ski areas in Nagano, including the vast Shiga Kogen, which is made up of 22 separate ski resorts. Tohoku in the north of Honshu Island contains the oldest ski resort in Japan - Zao - which dates back to 1920 and still has a old charm unlike the more modern resorts.
